How do I tame my anxiety? Sometimes that’s the million dollar question. However, over the last month or so I’ve been working toward taming anxiety in various forms. A little change can reap strikingly big rewards! So, here are some things that have helped me manage my anxiety:
1. Mental and physical self care is important, especially to curb anxiety before it arises.
My bedtime routine has been integral to taming my anxiety. When I get a good sleep, I am much more effective when addressing my anxiety as it gains momentum. To be honest, I have found that being rested actually reduces my anxiety significantly.
I also have allowed myself to say “no.” Who knew how liberating that would be? But by giving myself the ability to stop rushing through my day, I have left room for understanding and comprehending my own emotions. I can make time for what I want to do, even though my life is filled with rushing through emails, text messages and family events. I can say "no” politely, and give myself the opportunity to say “yes” to myself.
2. Getting back to the present.
Living in the moment helps to keep my mind at bay from the regrets of the past, as well as the fears I’m projecting into the future. I have been utilizing my meditation app @SBTBreathe, which has helped me understand my psyche a bit better. By giving myself grace and understanding I allow myself to know that anxiety isn’t meant to talk me out of trying something new, it should be motivation to pursue the unknown! I use little techniques like focusing on the physical things around me, people watching, or taking a step back and breathing. When I consciously put myself into the present, I feel my anxiety lessen and I am able to release the overwhelming feelings.
3. Understanding that all people feel anxiety in some form or another.
We aren’t the only one’s feeling anxiety! Whether it is mild or strong, I remind myself that I am not the only one feeling this way. This opens up a space of love and understanding, but mostly brings on an enormous sense of compassion for others. It brings me into a space of forgiveness for both myself, my emotions and others around me who may be feeling the same.
I hope this has helped you feel like you can equip yourself against bouts of anxiety!
