Plastic Free Living - How to Store Fruit

ree

In my previous post I talked about how to store veggies, herbs, and root veggies. Next on the list is how to store fruit. Thankfully it's not very hard to store fruit, most just need to be refrigerated. However, here are some tips to have an eco-conscious mind when it comes to storing fruit.

We love fruit in my house and it barely goes to waste, but here are some ways I store fruit the eco-friendly way!

  1. Apples, oranges, limes, lemons, and pears can all be stored in a fruit crisper with not much worry. Typically, I’ll put fruit out the night before so in the morning everyone can grab it and go. We use a designated basket for fruit on the counter and generally, by the end of the week, it's empty! It's an easy healthy way to get people to get some fruit into their diet. Most people will pick the first thing they see, so make the best choice the easiest one!

  2. Cut up fruit to save space. Cut up a bunch of fruit and store it in a sealed container in the fridge. Fruit that’s been cut may not last as long, but it's important to store it properly so you don’t waste it. This is an easy way to use up fruit that may have a few bumps and bruises to get eaten. Many times they end up on oatmeal, smoothies, and cereals without much trouble. For some fruit, spritz some lemon on them to stop from browning, like cut up apples.

  3. Store in containers that allow the fruit to breathe. Fruit like berries are happy in containers with holes or venting in them and without a lid. There are cute and effective containers to store berries in the fridge.

  4. Utilize beeswax wraps for half cut fruit and veggies like avocados and tomatoes. They are an easy alternative to cling wrap and help keep things fresh. For an extra measure put that half cut piece of fruit with a wrap on it and throw it into a container to keep the air from fully penetrating it and drying it out.

  5. Freeze fruit! I love to freeze bananas! Bananas can go bad fairly quickly, however I have found freezing fruit makes it easy to store and use when I want! I will put them on a small metal cookie sheet cut up and unpeeled with parchment paper and lay out the fruit I want frozen. When it's frozen I'll transfer it over to a container or a reused ziploc bag. With a label of when I froze it and what it is! It helps the next person looking for something identify it. Frozen fruit is an easy way to use fruit when it's out of season, or to keep it for longer for things like smoothies and other dishes.
