Plastic Free Living - How to Store Dried Ingredients

Buying in bulk helps cut down plastic consumption in our house. So a trip to the bulk store is always needed to keep up on our supply of dried herbs, spices, and nuts.

These are, thankfully, very easy to store. Here’s how I store them the eco-friendly way…

Store in Jars.

Jars from the recycling that have a solid sealed lid are the best choice if you are on a budget. If you’re looking for a more minimalist and cohesive kitchen there are many options to purchase too! I personally am on a budget, and trying to create a more sustainable kitchen, so any jar will do! Simply make a label for them with household objects like ribbon, tape, or even write on the jar itself with a permanent marker! Whatever your style is. Go for it, they are completely customizable.

Buy in bulk.

Take your pre-washed jars to the bulk section. Pro tip: weigh them before you fill them! Buying in bulk is not only cost effective, but also eco-conscious! Just be sure to make note on your label when you buy your product, so you know when it’s time to refresh them. This is also a fun way to bring in new kinds of spices and flours into your cooking, instead of mindlessly buying bagged spices and flours from an isle in your local grocery store.

Dry your own herbs and spices.

I love drying my own herbs and spices at the end of the season to extend the life of my harvest. And winters are better when I have flavours for my cozy dishes! If you or a friend have a garden, take some sprigs off the plant and keep them in a bushel to hang dry inside. Once they are ready, carefully pluck them off the stems and put into an airtight container for all your cooking needs. They last a long time and are a great addition to your meals!
