Staying Motivated in the Face of Social Media

It’s hard to stay motivated. Especially when we’re surrounded by social media content every single day. Our timelines curated and edited to perfection. These individuals are working as hard as you are to stave a lack of motivation and mental block.

How do I get out of my writer's block and stay motivated? Everyone has their own ways to get out of a funk. Many people struggle and feel stifled but it's up to you to keep moving forward to outrun a moment of writer's block. But don't feel down if you are stuck!

Here are 3 ways I get out of a funk when I need to get writing again!

  1. Don't ever stop. Keep writing, or photographing, creating of some sort. Whatever your niche is. The art of creation is to not wait for inspiration. But rather to keep creating until inspiration hits us and joins the fun! Getting into a constant creation pattern helps our brains filter things out. It helps keep away the bad self-talk that can cause writer's block to fester. Even if it's editing something that's only 150 words. A bit of work is always better than nothing! Even change where you write or create, go to a coffee shop, a park, or the library. Our brains thrive on novelty. So change it up and keep going even if you feel silly, stupid or feel like it's going nowhere. Trust me it’s going somewhere whether you believe it or not! Stay positive and do it for the process!

  2. Read books that inspire your creativity. As Marie Kondo would say “does it spark joy?” We only have so much time on earth so consume and enjoy the things you love with passion and fervour. Sometimes it helps to read a few pages of a book, blog, magazine, blog, or graphic novel to get the juices flowing! Reading can help you switch gears and get your thoughts in order so that you can create! Many times the right words in a book can spark ideas and inspiration without even knowing it! So keep reading things that bring your heart joy.

  3. Don't criticize or compare yourself. Give yourself grace in your vulnerable feelings. Criticism can create a huge mental block. Seeing others creating and doing it well can sometimes halt us and our creative process. Although it's easier said than done. Don't criticize where you are and what you are doing. Allow yourself the space to create, think, and then create again. Sometimes that's the greatest power we have is to keep going and find inspiration along the way. But if you find you are comparing yourself to those online in your field, stay away from it. Give yourself space. Stay off social media for an extended period. Keep a positive mindset that everyone’s story is different and your story matters!

We are all struggling a little bit, but are trying to get it out there. Social media has made it easy to curate our lives, but behind the scenes, it's exactly where you feel you are. Others choose to keep going and get out of that funk. And you can too!

So get out there and keep creating. Take inspiration from your writer's block, and keep moving forward. Forward momentum is always better than none. Happy creating!
